Three-Microprocessor Architecture

Feature: NIMBUS™ uses Three (3) microprocessors for data collection and analysis.
Benefit: As a result of having 3 microprocessors for data collection and analysis, all operating at faster speeds than competition, NIMBUS™ will operate minimally 120 times faster than competition and with at least several orders of magnitude more accuracy as it never misses a data point for collection.

Waveform Resolution

Feature: NIMBUS™’s direct to digital conversion of lightning signals increases the resolution of size, shape, and structure of the waveform. NIMBUS™ also identifies cloud-to-cloud activity early and often allowing NIMBUS™ to directly determine the type of lightning strike that has occurred.
Benefit: The NIMBUS™4 resolution is magnified and improved by at least 100 times allowing identification of cloud-to-cloud and cloud-to-ground strikes. This enables earlier and better identification of activity. Competition cannot identify cloud-to-cloud activity.

Lightning Data Array

Feature: NIMBUS™ will collect data up to 600 times faster and has the ability to store data, thereby analyzing up to 20,000 individual data points during severe storms and squall line activity.
Benefit: NIMBUS™ will collect and analyze up to 20,000 data points when mapping storm activity while the nearest competition only has capacity to analyze 24 data points. NIMBUS™ is more highly accurate and beyond comparison in speed!

Background Noise Suppression

Feature: NIMBUS™4 uses two types of signal analysis to both accurately suppress false positives that may occur and to allow for maximum sensitivity to real lightning activity. This completely filters normal types of products and devices found in autos, boats, field locations, office and home environments. NIMBUS™ also uses an advanced signal mapping and identification algorithm that creates a detailed noise background of a location and continually removes these signals from any activity. NIMBUS™ will constantly readjust without user involvement to always operate at maximum sensitivity.
Benefit: NIMBUS™4 captures and eliminates outside noise from the data stream allowing it to operate at the highest sensitivity level in any situation. The NIMBUS™4 and the NIMBUS™4D are the first hand-held lightning and storm detectors to feature a 4-channel, fully omni-directional antenna array.

Why omni-directional?

The orientation of each individual lightning stroke can vary from vertical to horizontal. Without a uniform antenna array, most of the energy and information is never detected.
NIMBUS™ antenna array captures the energy from lightning events with uniform sensitivity, regardless of the actual orientation.
The NIMBUS™ software then combines the information from all channels to give you a uniform view of the storm.
The information from any storm detection technology is only as good as the data it’s based on and the NIMBUS™ is designed to detect storm information at the highest level of sensitivity and accuracy!

THE NEW GENERATION OF STORM DETECTION

The foundation of the NIMBUS™ system is a multi-microprocessor architecture, which uses direct-to-digital detection of lightning waveforms. This high-resolution data is then analyzed by the NIMBUS™ software to categorize cloud-to-ground, cloud-to-cloud, and positive polarity lightning events.
In turn, this data is converted into active storm models that can track the approach of thunderstorms and squall lines, and display this information in the form of messages that translate speed and distance measurements into time for the user.

A key proprietary feature of the NIMBUS™ software is the ability to detect and identify fast-transient weather events that are the signatures of the most dangerous types of storm activity.

NIMBUS™ technology is direct real-time detection of localized fast-developing weather conditions, providing a level of weather data to users that is difficult or impossible to get from standard weather information sources.

The lack of accurate, real-time local storm information right now is primarily because the National Weather Radar system is designed to detect much larger weather events covering state-wide areas. The signatures of the most dangerous forms of storm activity, such as tornados, develop rapidly and on a much smaller scale (several thousand meters or less) than what is normally detected on the large-scale radar systems.

Lightning is extremely hot—a flash can heat the air around it to temperatures five times hotter than the sun’s surface. This heat causes surrounding air to rapidly expand and vibrate, which creates the pealing thunder we hear a short time after seeing a lightning flash. The NIMBUS™4D combines the un-paralleled storm detection capabilities of the NIMBUS™4 with Entropy’s patent-pending directional system. Using the high-resolution storm data collected by the 4-channel antenna array, the NIMBUS 4D software provides the bearing to storm activity in 30 degree segments. Multiple NIMBUS™4D units can be linked through the NIMBUS™ CloudBase™ to provide higher degrees of resolution. Just as with all storm information provided by the NIMBUS™ technology, the storm direction is based on real-time data processed at the exact location of the NIMBUS™ unit.

Why NIMBUS™4D?

The NIMBUS™4D display uses an on-board compass module to display the bearing to storm activity relative to true North. The storm bearing information is updated in real-time using the storm data being collected by the unit.


 

SUPPORT FOR EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT OPERATIONS

 

One of the primary features of the NIMBUS™ storm-tracking technology is the capability of finding the most dangerous areas of a larger storm system. This capability is the result of the very high resolution of the lightning data being detected by the NIMBUS™, along with the ability to process very high rates of incoming data. Since the NIMBUS™ is collecting data in real-time and from remote locations, the information is processed and made available to the user immediately.
This type of storm detection and processing makes the NIMBUS™ technology ideal for use by emergency management personnel when dealing with large-scale weather systems such as hurricanes, and immediately identifying most dangerous local areas in the storm that are producing high winds and potential tornado conditions. Since the NIMBUS™ detection is entirely self-contained and does not rely on any outside information, it can be made portable and offers a fail-safe severe weather information source when all other communication and power systems may be disabled.
